In regards to the displaying hidden characters, I'll have to think about it. There might be unwanted side effects.
The strange thing is that in my computer the symbol showed as a square, which I think it's ok, but I don't know why some people like him don't see it. Maybe it's because of the language (encoding?) of the OS?

Each symbol (char, digit, sign) is basically stored as an number only.
It depends on the current used code page as which glyph (form of appearance) such symbol is displayed, or not.

First 32 characters (00-1F hex) in the ASCII table are control characters. These characters have no association with any language or code page. The only way (I think) how they can be shown visually is if the used font actually has a symbol defined for those characters.
It seems that we might have different font files.

Me think the first 32 characters are defined in every code page. See any ASCII or Unicode table.
But those first 32 signs have the same value and meaning in every code page. That's the basic.
Because there are no two code tables for code below 33 and above, it's always just one.
It's correct that the used font must have a printable symbol (glyph) to display such an sign.
If the font designer have no interest in creating such glyph, it's just not visible on the screen.

* it would be helpful if the reason the rename failed was available (perhaps adding an "error message" column)
The "Error" column has been added in the v5.74.6 Beta: ReNamer Beta.

Ability to see detailed error message for each failed renaming operation is defiantly a "must have". This feature was on the wishlist for a long time and now I bumped it up to the top priority.

Great to hear error messages will be available.
As far as the "hidden" characters perhaps it is possible to verify the character is valid for the target file system, and error it.
or maybe the error message will be sufficient, but I do have to say that not being able to "see" it was a problem for me.
Thanks

PS I was running on a fully patched W7 64 bit system - if that helps determining which fonts are available.

In v5.74.7 Beta (2014-02-12) the control characters with codes 0-31 and 127 will now fail filename validation.
This will warn users of a the problem during a preview, before getting to the renaming stage.
