Failed to create key Directory\shell\ReNamer.Add.

It's been a couple months since I used ReNamer on my Win7x64 pc. Last I used it, it worked great. I saw there is a new 5.60 version, so I installed that before starting renaming work. I wanted to rename some .mp4 files to .m4a extension for use in iTunes. I tried to drag and drop the .mp4 files from Win Explorer to ReNamer, but none of the files appears in the ReNamer file list, although the "Drag your files here" message dissapears. I also tried to use the Add Folder and Add Files buttons, and the equivalent file menu items, but nothing works. No files appear.  I tried other types of files, and they don't appear either.

The mp4 files were created by Sony Vegas Pro 11, using Mainconcept AAC/AVC encoder. These are output as audio only files, although the encoder is a video encoder. It could be the files are a bit non-standard, since the video is missing.

I saw there was an mp4 issue in the forum, so I installed the beta version, 5.60+ beta 14. Still have the same problem.
I tried downgrading to 5.50, and same problem.

To try using the context menu to add files, I tried Settings Misc Add to folders context menu, and "Add to "Send to" context menu", but I get the error message "Failed to create key Directory\shell\ReNamer.Add."  when I click on Save. Is that a permissions issue?

Any thoughts on what the problem might be?  Or how to revive ReNamer?

ReNamer 5.50 beta 32 is working fine on my XP laptop, including the context menu options. (I won't touch the mp4 files or update ReName on that PC until I find out what is going on... ;-)

Can you try running the latest beta version with admin privileges? (Just right-click the EXE and run as admin).

I tried ReNamer 5.60+ beta 14. I cannot get files to appear in the files pane by drag and drop. But it works ok by Add Files.

I take that back. I can't get any files to appear in the files pane: drag & drop, add files, add folders -- nothing works. Hmmmm... not good. Should I uninstall ReNamer? Anything to clean from Registry?

I am not sure why you are not able to add files. This is the first time I head of this kind of issue. The problem with "Failed to create key Directory\shell\ReNamer.Add" is defiantly the permissions issue however. Did you try to run ReNamer as an administrator? Re: Failed to create key Directory\shell\ReNamer.Add.

I send this along with register e-mail. I will post it here to share information.

I launch ReNamer, and surprise that all my saved rules are gone. No problem, I create new rule, then try to drag and drop file from Windows Explorer, but it fail. I try to clean install, run as admin but all is no use. Update doesn't solve it either. I blame myself of messing too much with registry or something and, as a last effort, download beta version. I'm really glad that it works! And somehow, when beta version works, 5.60 that not working at all until I launch beta one become working too, I can drag and drop file again!

CoffeeCup, fjord:

Are there any updates to this issue, any clues? Which operating system, anti-virus, etc - are you using?

I still can't reproduce this issue...

The only thing that I can remember, that could cause the problem are Masks in Filter settings. Check it. Should be empty. Maybe you typed something before or accidentally... I couldn't reproduce your scenario.

Re: Failed to create key Directory\shell\ReNamer.Add.

Thanks eR@SeR - that was it!  Settings|Filters Masks: contained "*.jpg" from working with photos months earlier, but I was now working with txt and csv files. I cleared the mask and ReNamer is working normally again.

I only use ReNamer about every other month, so I completely forgot that I had used a mask. It never occured to me, and there is no indication in the program window that a mask is active. So I suggest to add a "Filter Mask" indication in the status line of the main window, when a mask is active. Or better yet, show the mask in the status line, or somewhere else in the main window.

Now I have resaved my preset with "Save filter settings with preset?" checked, so this shouldn't happen to me again.

I observed a little quirk with ReNamer while writing this post: When the Filter Settings dialog is open, ReNamer does not appear in Windows' Alt-Tab list of programs. (Win 7 x64). I had to use the taskbar icon to get back to ReNamer. Closing the Filter Settings dialog makes ReNamer reappear in the Alt-Tab list. (ReNamer v5.60+ beta 14).

Thanks eR@SeR

No welcome smile

When the Filter Settings dialog is open, ReNamer does not appear in Windows' Alt-Tab list of programs. (Win 7 x64). I had to use the taskbar icon to get back to ReNamer. Closing the Filter Settings dialog makes ReNamer reappear in the Alt-Tab list. (ReNamer v5.60+ beta 14).

Reproduced. Settings dialog too.
