Ok, so how about a red colored arrow icon together with a red colored "Overwrite" label, instead of usual "Rename"? This will defiantly make users think before pressing this button.
Available in the latest dev version.

Ok, I'm no graphic designer, but IMO this just looks ugly now:
We need a better icon for the buttons, especially one that is anti-aliased and also with a transparent background. Also while we're at it, the icons for the Add Files and Folders buttons are quite small compared to those for the Preview and Rename buttons. Maybe we can find some visually similar looking icons in some freeware icon set...
P.S. Very good suggestion BTW!

Andrew, does it actually appear with a white background around the buttons? This certainly is not intentional and does not occur on my system (XP). Something with Vista and 7 that makes image list drawn differently. I fixed the non-transparent background.
I agree about the icons, they are ancient and are obsolete at this point. By they way, for a good selection of free icons look here: 2000 Free "Farm-Fresh Web Icons"

Den, I find your solution extremely visible and practical.
If there is something that I can do to suggest and/or provide icons, I have a 25'000 icons library available....

Just some thought:
1.)
- Is not all renaming an overwriting? So this statement "Overwrite" makes not much sense to me.
I understand that the interface should stand clean, and i have not the right better idea right now.
Only always the same: Exclamation mark with tool tip "dangerous settings"
and/or show an warning dialog, even an more simple one as in my first suggestion like:
"Your settings allow overwriting on naming conflict - this could be dangerous! (Read the wiki) Continue? - OK Cancel"
2.)
- What is if i have checked "Options > Fix conflicting new names" ?
Will this "trump" this first "overwrite" setting to the opposite again?
If yes, should the label switch back to "Renaming", if "Fix" is enabled too?
3.)
- i never understand the wording of this setting "[ ] Overwrite files with new names"
because that's the nature of renaming: > Overwrite files with new names
so i had no guess what that will do.
I would understood this better (without reading the help) if it would be like:
[ ] Force overwriting files with new names on conflict
[ ] Allow overwriting files with new names on conflict
[ ] Overwrite automatically on naming conflict with new name
or such.
4.)
- to add to this wiki article:
What is the consequence if i don't use this setting and get an naming conflict?
Maybe:
"If there is a naming conflict as a result of renaming, those files are not renamed but marked as error."
"By enabling this setting you agree to overwrite automatically such files with new name..."
?
---------------
Here are some background info for others what we talking about:
ReNamer 5.50 +beta 50 (17. Juni 2011) (Download)
(i have this non-transparent background on XP too)
[ ] Overwrite files with new names
If there is a naming conflict as a result of renaming, the newly renamed files can overwrite
the existing files with the same names automatically.
Note that the name conflict can occur with a file that exists in the same folder, but which is NOT loaded in ReNamer.Note also that multiple files from the same folder may be renamed in such a way that most of them get overwritten in
sequence. In the worst case, only the last file to be renamed will survive!
CAUTION: Your important files can be overwritten without your knowledge![ ] Must be successfully confirmed by user
ReNamer will pop up confirmation dialog for every file that is to be overwritten. The old file will be
overwritten only if you confirm. (If the renamed file has no conflicts in its folder, ReNamer will rename
it without asking for permission.).
from our wiki: http://www.den4b.com/wiki/ReNamer:Program_settings
The confirmation dialog will give you 4 options:
Yes (One file)
No (One file)
Yes to All (All list)
No to All (All list)

- No, renaming is not necessarily an overwriting. Just the opposite: most of the cases, the number of the files remains the same...
- An "exclamation mark", or a "dangerous settings" string might be clear for people like us, who use ReNamer daily.
It would not be clear at all for the other users, IMHO.
"OVERWRITE" red lamp, as suggested by the author, is manifest & dummy-proof.
- If you add a warning dialog, then, every time you have overwrite set to ON, you have to push another button.
Please, no... Lenghty and more complicated than the simple and immediate red lamp, don't you think?
- What is if i have checked "Options > Fix conflicting new names" ?
Will this "trump" this first "overwrite" setting to the opposite again?
If yes, should the label switch back to "Renaming", if "Fix" is enabled too?
Good point!
In that case it might be logical to automatically revert red OVERWRITE to standard black RENAME, since there would be no overwriting at all!
This should NOT reset "Overwrite files with new names" flag, though.
Then, when you start another renaming session and you disable "Fix conflicting new names", black RENAME button should change again to red OVERWRITE, if "Overwrite files with new names" flag is still active, of course.
I would understood this better (without reading the help) if it would be like:
[ ] Force overwriting files with new names on conflict
[ ] Allow overwriting files with new names on conflict
[ ] Overwrite automatically on naming conflict with new name
Stefan, I don't understand the difference between these items, so it is not dummy-proof!

"By enabling this setting you agree to overwrite automatically such files with new name..."
If you use overwriting, then you agree to overwrite automatically and with or without warning.
If you use automatic name conflict fixing, then there is no overwriting, so where is the problem?

Stefan, I've implemented a different approach for rendering that icon in ReNamer 5.50+ Beta 51. I've tested on XP and 7, shows correctly on both.
Can you confirm the status on the background problem on your system?

Beta 51 looks good on XP. No white background around the arrow of the Rename/Overwrite button anymore. Good work Denis.
