"Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

The option Settings->Rename->Overwrite files with New Names is very useful, but might also very dangerous for obvious reasons...
And, since this setting is (rightly so...) kept from one session to the following one, it is easy to forget it ACTIVE.
It happened to me.

So I think that a sort of red warning lamp such as "OVERWRITE" should appear somewhere in the toolbar when this option is on.

But, it already has an option (below) to ask you for confirmation. I don't get the point of another warning.

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

I know that there is a confirmation option, but that option, which is hidden into the menus, must obviously be disabled if you have to rename a sizable number of files, otherwise you have to confirm hundreds or even thousands of renames...
That is what happened to me: I had to rename more than 10'000 files, with hundreds of overwritings. So I enabled overwrite and disabled the warning.
During the lenghty renaming operation, I was caught in another job. When I came back, renaming had finished, so I logged out the PC.
This morning I had to rename other files, but, this time, without overwriting. Doing several things at a time, I forgot that I had left unprotected overwriting ON and that caused undesired deletion of some 100 files (luckily I had a backup).
Of course it was my bad, I understand it, but an "Overwriting ON" red warning lamp on the toolbar would have avoided that...

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

I see your point.

Idea:
Perhaps an other possibility of an warning
would be to show an (optional) dialog after pressing at [Rename]
which shows the state of such settings and an summary of what will happen:

--------------------------------
Rename

About to rename 83 out of 123 files. (5 duplicates detected)

Your settings are:
Validate new names used:  - - - -No
Overwrite files with New Names: Yes WARNING!
Fix conflicting new names: - - - -No

Continue?

[ OK ]  [ Cancel ]
--------------------------------

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

but the confirmation dialog gives 4 options

Yes (One file)
No (One file)
Yes to All (All list)
No to All (All list)

isn't that enough?

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

Stefan/SafetyCar: thanks for your replies. I think that it is comfortable to have a single RENAME button, without adding further slowing down dialogues.
If it is so complicated to add a red warning lamp, maybe it is far easier to have the RENAME button written in RED if overwriting is ON and in standard BLACK under ordinary no-risk conditions...

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

I think this will be a good feature to have and it is an easy one to implement. Rename button is now highlighted in RED when "Overwrite files with New Names" option is enabled.

You can try it from here: ReNamer Beta

I also like Stefan's idea. I will put it down for future.

GREAT, Den! Thanks!!
Downloaded ReNamer v.5.50 beta 49 and tried it: perfectly... Fitting!
I suggest to specify, in page http://www.den4b.com/?x=downloads, the current version of beta.

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

Hi Denis, i don't want to be an party-pooper and don't want to make you more work

but i want to mention that there are a lot of people not able to see
the difference of just an altered color. (at least not easy to spot)

So an other visible indicator seams to be needed.... f.ex. switch the arrow icon
to an exclamation mark icon, or like this.
Or even alter the label "Rename" to smtg like "Rename (!)" or such.

Or how about an tool tip for this buttons to show an warning? OK, not that nifty.

Sorry, Just want to help.

Re: "Overwrite files with New Names" warning lamp

Stefan, I agree with your suggestion.
But, if you use frequently ReNamer, the new Red+Bold Rename button jumps immediately to your eyes.
On the other side, a "!" instead of an arrow would not say much to an unexperienced user: that's why I proposed some "OVERWRITE=ON!" flag, well visible, in red, somewhere along the windows borders. That would be dummies-proof.
Just my 2 cents...
