Preview when creating rules

Renamer is a very useful rename software.
The Regular Expression feature is very nice and clear.

What I don't like is that I have to add the rule before to preview the new names.
I would like to see a button "Preview" in Add Rule in order to preview the results before adding the new rule.

(This is specially util when testing regular expressions)

Another little note:
My DPI settings in windows = 115% (110dpi).
When I click on Insert Meta Tag I can't see the buttons very well (even when I resize the window).

Re: Preview when creating rules

Hi Remon, welcome.

I think the "Preview"-button is already there, it is labeled [ + Add Rule ]
If you click this button you can see how it works in the "New Name" column.
If it doesn't fit, just double click the rule to modify it.

You may also take an look onto "Options > Analyze sample text"
where you can paste in file names to test your rules without loading any real file.

Also please don't hold on to create one thread for each single question.
Putting several question into one thread is not nifty for several reasons.

Thank you.
Happy ReNaming... ;-)

Re: Preview when creating rules

I didn't make myself clear.

I don't know the delphi Regular Expressions so I was testing it on a few filenames. Everytime I had to click on add rule and edit rule again (when Reg.Expressions didn't do what I would like them to do).
So I thought that it would be easier to have another button in the Add Rule window:

"Preview"

In this way, without leaving the Add Rule window I would see the change it made.

Re: Preview when creating rules

Yes i had understood you.
And yes it would be nice to have an auto-changing preview string of the first file name at the bottom of the RegEx Rule-Dialog.

But there is no big difference if you click at an ["Preview"] or an [ + Add Rule ] button.

If you click an ["Preview"] button an preview appears to show you what happens.
You close them and modify the expression.

If you click the [ + Add Rule ] button the main (or the Analyze) window has the focus to show you what happens.
You double click the rule and modify the expression.

No much time saved.

Re: Preview when creating rules

Oh yes it did take time wink
I did this over 20 times because the regular expressions language was not the same as I use in Vim.
The advantage of direct update is that you can work with 2 windows.
One to create the regex formula and the other to see the results.
Sure, not everybody may agree with what I'm writing here.

Re: Preview when creating rules

Indeed I agree with you.
Nothing like reloading the field of the preview in runtime(but it'll be very cool), but a button there to do this.

And yes, it saves time.

Re: Preview when creating rules

I can definitely concur. This is the missing feature why I sometimes use other applications for rename jobs. While editing a rule I want to immediately see the result.
Case in point is when I want to remove a certain amount of characters (say from about the 10th till about the 15th character). Now I do some guessing to get initially in the neighbourhood, and then have to change the rule another one or two times to correct.

This feature would probably make me uninstall the other rename applications.

Re: Preview when creating rules

I really would like to "add my vote" for this live-preview feature.

ReNamer excels virtually every functionality of other renaming tools - it has a clean, nice interface, is very powerful and has a lot of sophisticated options.

But the missing live-preview option is a big disadvantage. I recently had to rename many, many files, inserting characters at certain positions and removing characters from certain positions. As it was said before, I always had to guess the index of those characters, close the rules window just to see that I had to correct the index, again editing the rule, again closing the rules window and again and again. This is also the case for other renaming functions (like regex, mentioned above).

So the feature request for me is: Update the preview file list immediately when changing options in the rules window (like positions of characters) and make this immediate update an option to turn it on and off.

With this functionality, ReNamer is the number one tool for renaming files.

(You can also guess how important this is by the number of views of this forum thread.)

Is there any chance this will be added soon?
