Re: Presets Directory in VirtualStore

Well, now that's interesting. So I guess if Denis uses the same method to access the Presets as is being used to access the INI, then that might presumably work as well... If it does, then the solution ought to be transparent to non-Vista users, and Vista users can be happy as well! smile

Re: Presets Directory in VirtualStore

About possibly permanently storing the INI elsewhere in a user's directory of his choice, I think that the canonical solution would be that the program (not the user!) writes a symbolic link in the program's directory. Under Vista that would be stored in VirtualStore, but this does not matter, ALA it is tested that the program can read the link. Since it is only a link, no genuinely useful information would be buried in VirtualStore.

Re: Presets Directory in VirtualStore

I am aware that this becomes a concern for some Vista users. In fact, this question/suggestion has been already raised several times, for example: Vista vs ReNamer, Where are presets stored on Vista.

I understand that it is an important issue for some of you, but I so so so don't want to work on this. There are reasons, here are few: 1) breaking my idea of "portability"; 2) no motivation for this task;  3) dependant on individual versions of Windows; 4) very time consuming implementation; etc.

This goes as "+1" on my TODO list, but I can't tell for sure when I get to this task.

P.S. I might move this topic to the "Suggestions" section.

Re: Presets Directory in VirtualStore

Well, if and when you ever get around to this Denis (no hurry for me at least, 'cos I plan to skip Vista entirely! wink), please don't sacrifice the portability of the app. smile

Re: Presets Directory in VirtualStore

den4b, you might wish to notify me by email when you should find time to attack that issue so that I might make more precise conceptual suggestions or test, subject to my then available time!

Andrew, nobody wants to sacrifice the portability! The worst thing that should happen is to test whether a particular directory exists and its access rights before using it:)
