Please see the attached image for the rule
4) Replace: Replace first "-9" with "- 09" (skip extension)
Renamer appears to change the original file name "p 08 - 09.jpg" to "p08 - 0-09.jpg"
yet the string "-9" does not appear in the original file name.

Not for me.
It is possible a problem with your first three rules.
Read the *WIKI* for HELP + MANUAL + Tips&Tricks.

Here is another example illustrating the problem

Can't reproduce your issue.
See a quick demo below:
Please try to reproduce your issue with an isolated instance of ReNamer, with minimal modifications. You can simply unpack a fresh copy of the portable version of ReNamer into a temporary folder.

Done with the latest version of Renamer Portable.
Only 1 rule.

Still can't reproduce your issue with visually same filenames and the same rename rule.
Something odd is going on with your setup. There may be some magic Unicode characters involved.
First, try to create two empty files and name them as follows:
1990-07-00 07.00 MA-00 000001ch.jpeg
1990-08-00 00.00 MA-00 000002ch.jpeg
Copy and paste the names from the snippet above, not from your original files, it is important!
Try to reproduce the issue with these dummy files.
Additionally, please add your original files to ReNamer and export the filenames using the "Export file paths and new names" option from the Export menu. Please email the resulting file without modifying it. You can find the email address in the About dialog.

Export sent as requested thanks.
I created a new file and attempted to rename it, it seems there may be no hidden characters.

Thank you for sending the export file.
Unfortunately, it did not help us reproduce the issue. That is very puzzling.
I presume you are using the latest version of ReNamer 7.3? If not, please try the latest.
With your portable version, please close ReNamer and then delete the "Settings.ini" file and the "Presets" folder, if it exists. Then, create those dummy files manually (remove/move the originals if they conflict by name). Open ReNamer, add the dummy files, add the problematic rule manually (do not load it from presets). Confirm that your issue still occurs. Save your renaming rule in a new preset and send the preset file by email please. You can find the preset file in the "Presets" folder.
So far it appears that the issue is caused by external interference, possibly other software, but it is unclear how that could happen. Please attempt to reproduce your issue on a different computer, using ReNamer Lite (no need to register it).
