Replacing spaces with underscore

Hi

First time user of ReNamer.

I've figured out how to replace the dash with an underscore but I'm wondering which rule is used for replacing spaces between words with underscores.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Replacing spaces with underscore

You can use the Replace rule for performing simple substitutions.

I presume you have used the Replace rule for converting dashes into an underscore as well?

Thank you for responding. smile

Yes, in 'ADD Rule' then 'Replace' I replaced the dash with an underscore. But in all the options I don't see anything that allows a 'space' to be replaced by an underscore or dash. Maybe 'space' is designated differently on the options?

Re: Replacing spaces with underscore

The space character is not treated differently. Just type out the space in the Find field and the underscore in the Replace field.

Note that in the Unicode standard there are many different white space characters. You can use the "Normalize Unicode spaces" option from the CleanUp rule to convert all variations of the white space to a basic space character.

What do you mean by, "type out the space"?

In other words, what did you do in the replace panel to get what the red arrow is pointing at in the image? I tried typing single quote marks with a space between them, double quote marks, even just moving one space on the bar, but none of these made underscores where there are spaces in the file name.

Thank You

Just press the space bar on your keyboard, while the cursor is in the Find field of the Replace rule. No quotes.

Also, add a Clean Up rule before the Replace rule, with the "Normalize Unicode spaces" option enabled, to fix unusual white space characters. See the previous post for more information.

It it still doesn't work, please use the "Export file paths and new names" option from the Export menu and share the exported file.

Re: Replacing spaces with underscore

Yes, that worked.

What I had done previously was thinking that the since 'Normalize unicode....' was already checked by default I thought it was already added and so closed the panel instead of closing with the left, 'add rule' button. Now I know that any rules must be 'added' whichever configuration. smile

Thank you for your help. And I take the opportunity here to wish you Happy Holidays and a Good New Year.
