Update user interface during long operations

Please update the user interface during long operations for a better user experience. Doing so would also allow for a cancel button to stop a current operation.

This feature/enhancement has been on the list for a long time, but, despite that fact, it still can't be implemented anytime soon.

There are are too many outstanding tasks with a higher priority.
