Shorten File name & Path

Hello Forum,

First off, this program is awesome, thank you for it.

In short, I have a lot of files that I am transferring from an external USB drive to my windows 64Bit hard drive and I am getting an error about the length of a file name.

After having RENAMER analyze the files, it has found about 730 files that have reached MAX_Path. What
I would like to do is to reduce the file name, including directory names to 250 characters, (Max for windows is 260).

I read these two posts:
den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=381
den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1407

and searched the forum but wasn’t able to find what I was looking for.

I would like to delete anything after 250, including the file path, for these selected (730) files and have been unsuccessful so far.

Can someone please help?

Thank you,
RD

Re: Shorten File name & Path

Hi RD, welcome.

I think that's not a good idea to do this work automatically. If not impossible at first place.

My opinions!

No script can guess which folder name to shorten in which way.
For one file it may be enough to just shorten the file name, for others you have to cut one or another folder name too.
If you cut folder names,... this would affect other files too, not only the one too long now.
Anyway you would loose information from names turning your data into a collection of nonsense.

So, especial with that less information provided, better go shorten the folder and file names your self by hand.
Often it may be enough to shorten the first few folders. Or map (subst) an sub folder as new drive letter to shorten the path to be able to copy.

Anyway, maybe there is a way with a clever script. But I don't feel the joy or have the time to do the research or even create the environment tongue

Re: Shorten File name & Path

RD, could you list examples of the long paths? Try to include as many variations as possible.

As Stefan has suggested, it is dangerous and unpredictable to simply cut off parts of the path, but maybe there is a generic pattern that could be used safely...
