Hi all,
I have a huge problem, and I'm hoping you can help. I used ReNamer today to change the characters "#", "$", "&", "~" to "_". This is because I was transferring some files to a web server that didn't like those symbols in the file names. I created this rule and ran it in the "My Documents" folder which contained over 11,000 files (20+ GB). It seemed like the program worked well, as it finished, and I confirmed the file names that I knew were bad, got changed. However, none of my files can actually be opened now, not even the files that were unaffected by the renaming process. .PDF, .xls, .doc, .ppt, etc. None will open. They appear to be corrupted. I'm not sure how this could have happened, but it happened right after running the program. Windows still recognizes the files as legit in windows explorer (the extensions did not change), but they do not open.
Any suggestions on how to revert these files back to working order, or how this could have happened would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
JC

Hi JC, welcome to the community.
That sounds no good. I never have expiring such behaviour.
And that even untouched files stopped working after using ReNamer is even more bizarre.
Let's make an test:
Restore some files from your backup and see if they are still open. They should as they are not modified by ReNamer in any way.
Or, how about files outside your "My Documents" folder?
If they not open too, you may have done something to your registry by altering the registering of the file types.
(Did you have used an "cleaner tool" ?)
Try to right click an .doc file and chose "Open with..." and point to your word application exe to open the .doc with word.

That doesn't sound right. ReNamer only changes the names of files and in the manner shown in the preview table, it does not modify the content of files thought standard rules (note that custom PascalScript rules can modify the content of files).
Have you used any other applications or applied system modifications in the same period of time?
Did files change the size? Did they loose file extension? (Show file extensions on Vista, XP)
Can you send a sample word document, music file or an image so we can test it?

Hi,
This just happened to me (a bit annoyed but it's not work so it's cool).
I wanted to rename some folders on a usb stick I use for fixing PCs. I knew reNamer could do it, and sought to find the solution, found an article which said to change the filters, which I did, and afterwards the filenames and files were garbled and inaccessible.
Here is the changed filter options:
The folders each had a "- " before their name (thought it was a good idea to name them this at the time), but serves annoying to navigate to the files with the keyboard, so decided to rename them
These are the folder names AFTER they have been renamed:
--
All went well. Navigated inside a folder, and was faced with this!!
(the colour-coding of the files is my doing, with an app called xplorer2)
--
Appears the USB stick is now corrupt (never happened to me before).
--
And not saying it's reNamer's fault, but coincidental.
Regards all, and thanks
