Continue to fight spammers

Spammers are, simply put, a plague, to any community.

I'm not talking just about spam bots, which are actually easy enough to counter act. Human spammers, coming mostly from eastern corners of the planet (such as India, China, Philippines, etc) where I am guessing the cost of labor is so cheap that advertisers can hire 1000 hours worth of human labour for no other reason but to create spam on the Internet, probably for the same cost as putting a single solid advertisement in other media in one of the countries "actually" targeted by these advertisements.

It is hard to imagine how much time already got wasted, hours, days, even whole weeks to clean up the spam and implement the anti-spam measures.

Anyway. I've upgraded the forum software to the latest release and now integrating various anti-spam features. I am hoping that these measures will make spammers waste more time then few of us have to waste on fighting them.

Re: Continue to fight spammers

I want to provide a gmail address for real users to ask there question
which i will re-post into the forum. Only as an work around.

I know i may get there spam also but that doesn't matter ;-)

Done:

For the time being till the registration to this forum is enabled again,
If YOU need help you can send an mail at "SoftwareAncilla"
and ask your question there. I will take a look at least once a day
if you have mailed us and post your question to the forum.
There you can read the answer. I will not answer the email directly.

Sorry for the unpleasantness, but this days we have no alternative.

Ah, BTW, the above mentioned account is hosted at gmail.com

Re: Continue to fight spammers

I posted a big entry on the FluxBB forum regarding anti-spam measures and issues:
Anti-SPAM: problems and solutions.

I am hoping that it will attract some attention and things will get moving in this direction.

Re: Continue to fight spammers

Registration is now open again! smile

I've integrated reCAPTCHA, Honeypot and StopForumSpam solutions. After just a few hours of operation we already have 70 blocked user registrations, which are all verified spammers, I double checked them. I also removed about 400 users that had no posts and used links in their profile.

Re: Continue to fight spammers

It is amazingly effective!

2012-11-20    132
2012-11-21    374
2012-11-22    349
2012-11-23    390
2012-11-24    231

Those are the stats for the number of blocked verified spammers per day. The first and last days are not full days, so the average is the order of 300-400 per day. I've also allowed contributions from our forum to be published on http://www.stopforumspam.com/contributors and guess what - within just a few days it is already in the top half of all contributors! wink
