When will preview occur?

A preview run is allways done on the whole set of files.

So if you drop the first file the rules inspect this one.
If you drop a second file preview is done on both and so on.

I tend to have this auto-options switched of as it is realy timeconsuming after a drop in of 1.000 pictures. After I have put my files, sorted them and checkmarked what I'd like to rename I click on the preview button.

How often will the script ask?

Denis build the script in a way that it will only ask once (in one preview run) for the first file and reuse the value for all the other files. I interpreted your question in a way that you'll need different prependings for every file or at least every group of some files. So my script (or Denis' without the "Initialized") will ask that often.

No preview at all?

disable updating the preview each time you ...

but then I won't see the preview 

You won't get any renaming without a preview - but it is just one click (or press of F5) away ...
